Approval Granted for Edinburgh Park's Residential Development

Parabola has been given unanimous approval by the City of Edinburgh Council’s Development Management Sub-Committee (DMSC) for a new masterplan for the Southern Phase of its Edinburgh Park development. Parabola aims to create a zero carbon, sustainable, vibrant new quarter of the city. At the heart is Parabola’s commitment to create a new community which provides a variety of high-quality homes to meet the growing needs of the city, including a vital element of affordable accommodation. The residential component will complement the range of other uses to create a new urban quarter of the city creating an exemplar with a commitment to wellbeing at its core.

These plans will create a new community and architectural exemplar at the park’s southern edge. The detailed planning permission includes:

- 43,000 sq m of commercial space including a significant commercial hub and public square at Edinburgh Park railway station

- 1,737 new homes – predominantly apartments – in a combination of affordable, private residential and build-to-rent

- 25% affordable housing

- A 170-bedroom apartment hotel

- An emphasis on sustainable transport with low levels of car parking

- Extensive high-quality public realm including a large public park, play areas and beautiful gardens.

Peter Millican, founder and Chairman of Parabola said:

“This is another great step forward in creating a unique quarter of our city. Parabola is pleased that we can continue to deliver a place to work, live and relax at Edinburgh Park that will be an important element in building back a better city.”

Tony Hordon, Managing Director of Parabola said:

“We are delighted at the approval of this planning application. It is a testament to the diligence and hard work of our professional team who have worked cooperatively and collaboratively with the city council. Edinburgh Park is a new sustainable, zero carbon urban quarter, an exemplar in place-making which will not only become an exciting place to live and work, but also a cultural destination and creative campus for the city.”

Andrew Munnis, Partner at Parabola’s planning consultants Montagu Evans, said:

“This decision is an important milestone. It will bring a new sense of place to Edinburgh Park, introducing a wider mix of uses into the area and helping to establish a new urban quarter in line with the broader aims of the City of Edinburgh Local Development Plan.

Architecture and Design Scotland, who implement Scotland’s Policy for Architecture and Place on behalf of the Scottish Government, commented that the masterplan should be supported as a Level 1 Exemplar due to the high-quality aspirations of the applicant and design team. The Convenor of the City Council’s DMSC noted in his summing up that this masterplan sets a new standard for Edinburgh.
